Position: Advanced Materials & Technology Engineer

Location: Nashua, NH

Amphenol High Speed Products Group is the market leader for high speed, high bandwidth electrical connectors for the Telecom/Datacom market (Mobile Networks, Storage, Servers, Routers, Switches, etc.). Our products help to enable the electronics revolution and remain a key enabler for all the major Tier 1 OEMs globally. Our global headquarters are located in Nashua, NH, with design, sales, and manufacturing locations worldwide. We are currently seeking an experienced Advanced Materials & Technology Engineer to join our team and support our full range of material technologies — including polymers, metals, coatings, composites, and elastomers — across our high-speed interconnect and cable assembly product lines.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As an Advanced Materials & Technology Engineer reporting to the Advanced Materials and Technology Manager, you are responsible for the development, evaluation, and implementation of advanced materials and processes across Amphenol’s interconnect technologies.

  • Evaluate and assess new materials (polymers, metals, coatings, composites, elastomers, conductive elastomers, etc.) and processes to support Amphenol’s technology roadmap.
  • Conduct lab- and pilot-scale experiments to prototype and validate emerging technologies and their processes for next generation designs.
  • Assist in the development and execution of test plans for the validation of new material technologies, including elastomeric and conductive elastomer components, for next generation interconnect and backplane designs.
  • Characterize the electrical performance of conductive elastomers and composites (volume and surface resistivity, low-level contact resistance, resistance versus compression) and correlate results to cable assembly and backplane interface requirements.
  • Support material characterization, reliability testing, and performance benchmarking; develop accelerated test methods to ensure long-term reliability.
  • Collaborate with Development, NPI, Signal and Mechanical Integrity, cable operations, and manufacturing teams to identify material challenges and translate findings into manufacturable solutions.
  • Engage in early-stage concept development to capture design needs, customer requirements, and cost-reduction opportunities.
  • Interface with internal and external suppliers, research labs, and universities to assess emerging material and process technologies.
  • Analyze results using Excel, Minitab, MATLAB, or equivalent tools to find data-driven insights.
  • Document technical findings, prepare reports, and communicate recommendations to stakeholders — using visuals, presentations, and written reports as appropriate.
  • Support technology transfer and scale-up of validated processes to manufacturing teams.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Plastics/Polymer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline (Master’s or PhD preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in materials development, processing, or advanced manufacturing, ideally spanning multiple material families (polymers, metals, coatings, composites, elastomers); electronics/interconnect industry experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with materials characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, DSC, TGA, DMA, FTIR, rheology, microscopy, mechanical testing).
  • Experience with elastomer processing a plus, including liquid silicone rubber (LSR) injection molding of small precision components (tooling, cure, flash/dimensional control) and rubber extrusion, high consistency rubber (HCR)  (die design, cure, dimensional control).
  • Working knowledge of electrical testing methods for conductive composites (volume and surface resistivity, low-level contact resistance, four-wire measurement) and how filler loading, plating, and compression affect performance — a plus.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes (injection molding, plating, coatings, adhesives, composites) a plus.
  • Experience with solid modeling tools (Creo, SolidWorks, and/or NX); proficiency in polymer flow software (Moldflow, Sigmasoft, and/or Moldex3D) a plus.
  • Experience with data analysis software: MS Excel, MATLAB, Minitab, and/or Origin.
  • Curiosity-driven mindset with a passion for innovation and emerging technologies.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to link material properties to performance.
  • Collaborative mindset with excellent communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders; desire and ability to make a hands-on, positive impact.
